CONNIE: Do you have any idea of the number of seniors blogging like your mom..Danah Boyd has pretty good study data on Teens using Social Networks and twitter(microblogging) I think blogging is a great journaling activity for the over 60 age group and should be encouraged - like you are doing with your Aunt.

Connecting the dots through the generations is a great phrase, and one that describes a process I have only been able to stimulate(I have 4 kids and 12 grandkids) in an extended family usage of the internet is using Facebook as the glue.

I have a web research tool for elderly bloggers like Aunt Norma you might find useful. Let me know via email if you'd like to show it to Connie Sr. and Aunt Norma.

The photo, the blogger mom concept, the generational inspiration...absolutely sublime!

Connie, my mom is a pithy, former journalist who could write circles around me and has been my inspiration for years. I've tried to get her to start a blog to capture some of her gems to no avail, so I'm sending her this link right now! Fingers crossed...It would be a great holiday gift to have her wisdom in the blogosphere...sounds like our two moms could have a wicked good time together!

p.s. There's a reader that comments on Shaping Youth often who set up a site called "grammology" ---and she's FAR more tech literate than I am, so you're absolutely right...smart silvers can be very savvy netsters, adding such a wondrous level of depth to the dialog!

Aunt Norma, I could get a blog set up for you in a manner of minutes and show you how to use it. It's not difficult and your extended family would love to read it. Know what I'd love to hear you write about? Being a career woman back when it was not the common thing to do.

Laurie, you know that Shel Israel has been on your case to blog ever since Orlando. And now you've let Mamacita beat you to it!

Jon, that is great that your mom is social networking and expanding her Barbie collection. What a fun thing for her to do.

Kare, I love your phrase "connecting the dots through the generations." It has been a joy for me to show my mom a few things and for her to experience the fun of being online.

Anecdote: I took mom to lunch on her 83rd birthday. She casually says, "Well, I googled armadillos today because they're just tearing up the yard ..." I couldn't help laughing and she got indignant. "I know how to surf the 'Net," she says.

That wasn't the point, of course. What tickled me is not just that she knew how to use Google to search but that she used it as a verb. The older generation is a lot smarter than we give them credit for - they just need some basic instruction on how to do things online.

I'm really proud of my mother and my aunt. I know many people younger than they are who don't even know how to turn their computers on, much less jump into the conversations out there.

But now the pressure is on for the black sheep (i.e. the only non-blogger in my immediate family) to get with the program. Maybe next year...

PS Loved the pink boa photos.

I'd be willing to bet that Connie Sr. is not the only person Connie Jr. convinced to start blogging. She's a SocNet work horse! (that's a compliment, i think)

On a personal note, my own mother got a MySpace account and through that profile found some interesting blogs on collecting Barbies (one of her long lost hobbies from the past). That was six months ago. When I went home two weekends ago, my former room was now a shrine to Barbie and there are over 150 tiny dolls watching me sleep at night.

Needless to say, beware of the power wielded by social networks. It will haunt your sleep...

I just gotta get me a blog going - can't let Connie get ahead of me (although she's ahead of me by almost 2 years). Next Monday I'll be 82 years young and I've been using the internet for 20 years and there's still so much I don't know!

Connie, keep up the good work.

I thank everyone for their kind words. I always knew my daughter, Connie Lavon, could write. When she was in high school she wrote funny fake obituaries of famous people. I couldn't let her get ahead of me--hence the blog. I am having fun at my age! Connieversations!
I love it.
